Building Cultural Capital and Social Mobility at WHSG
Preparing our pupils for the next stage of their journey
At WHSG, pupils are offered the following enrichment, experiences and opportunities:
- One Enrichment Day per year to enable pupils to experience the wider school curriculum, including Enterprise Days
- Assembly themes which focus on key dates, moments in history and remarkable people
- The annual Black History Month event
- A broad and balanced curriculum
- A knowledge of Building Learning Power pedagogy to build pupils’ independence
- Careers advice and access to the school’s Career Advisor
- The annual Charity Week which raises the awareness of local and national charities and enables pupils and staff to work together through the House system
- Compulsory Bronze DofE for all Y9 pupils, and the opportunity to continue to the Silver and Gold Awards
- A variety of creative, cultural, musical and sporting extra-curricular clubs, lessons and societies
- Development of their general knowledge through quizzes and other form time activities
- Membership of the school’s Green Group who undertake beach cleaning in the locality
- A focus on the need to develop a Growth Mindset to build resilience
- Encouragement to develop and use higher order thinking skills
- A commitment to the Jack Petchey Award and Speak Out Challenge
- Leadership opportunities through the House System, School Council, Learning Council, Senior Team and Prefect system
- A well-resourced library
- The opportunity to participate in mock elections and referendums
- Participation in and / or attendance at the annual school musical
- The Oxbridge Society to prepare pupils for applications to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities
- Support in preparing for their next steps e.g. Into The Future and the Higher Education Fayre for VI Form pupils
- A comprehensive PSHEE programme from Y7 through to Y13
- Aspects of SMSC are highlighted during lessons
- Trips to the theatre, open not only to pupils of English and Drama
- A variety of trips and visits both at home and abroad
- An annual visit to Southend General Hospital for those VI Form pupils intending to study Medicine at University
- Opportunities to participate in a variety of sports teams
- Opportunities for work experience in Y10 and for those who wish to undertake additional work experience in the VI Form
- Opportunities for short and long-haul trips abroad with World Challenge, where pupils undertake projects within the local communities
